In previous blogs I have made the connection between our current economic status and the Depression of the 1920's, but is it a stretch to attribute FDR's presidential qualities in our next president Barack Obama? A New York Times article entitled "75 Years Later, A Nation Hopes for Another F.D.R." explores the similarities and differences between FDR's first press conferences after the election in 1932 and Obamas. In his first press conferences after the election Obama said "we are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we're going to have to act swiftly to resolve it" which gave the nation the same message that FDR gave in 1933, "action and action now" to fix this nation and bring it back up to standards of prosperity.
Obama will take office with a deep rooted economic turmoil similar to the situation in which FDR took office after Hoover's inadequate solutions to the Depression. Even though FDR had a little more to clean up, Obama has his own fair share to fix especially with the current speculations of the failing car industry that could lead to a loss of jobs in the whole state of Michigan. Obama also shows similar qualities as FDR such as the way he campaigned for change and gave his citizens a sense of hope and not fear. The hope that Obama personifies in his character is expected to lead the country to the same solutions and strides FDR made after the depression.
No matter how Obama's presidency turns out, the fact that the comparison is even suggested is a credit to the extrodinary strides Obama has thus far taken. With many similarities between the situations that FDR and Obama took office, their characters are quite different. FDR was from a highclass background and Obama made his strides from the lowest social status, from a position in which no one would have fathomed him becoming president. This great difference shows how far our democratic system has grown to be run by such different characters seeking the same determined goals with our nation.
